Lacking of sustainable environment owing to poor waste management

Climate fluctuations constitute a major global challenge and Pakistan is suffering particularly badly. During the winter of 2021, dense smog affected major parts of central Punjab and Lahore was ranked most polluted city in the world [1]. There thus is an urgent need to tackle pollution and take effective steps towards a climate-neutral Pakistan. Pakistan currently has a poor recycling infrastructure. Since recycling technology would need to be imported, it would require a large investment which is not feasible for lack of a viable business model (low value of recycled goods). Waste is simply burned in open air causing massive pollution (smog), lowering life expectancy of workers and nearby population. In addition, there is significant industrial waste, e.g. from the leather industry, polluting rivers.
